Around the San Jose area. I remember on one of our visits, one of the volcanoes erupted (burped, really) right in front of us. We whipped out our video camera and started shooting and the kids were like 10 times more interested in our camera than the fact that a volcano was going off right behind them...
And yes, the food. You'll find most of it is rather bland too. One of the staples is black beans and rice. Sometimes they go crazy and throw in cilantro! This is why I can't handle Mexican food.
Oh yeah! Fried platano... mmmm... with a little bit of brown sugar and butter... mmmm... now I'm hungry. And if you can, try to find someone there (usually just kind of parked on the side of the road) with fresh sugar cane. Ooooh, there's nothing quite like it...
Whenever I get packages from my grandparents, I always ask for platano chips (which can easily be found by riding a bus and grabbing them from the people selling food) and coffee.
And if you haven't noticed, Costa Ricans are REALLY nosey. The bus we were riding nearly tipped over when we passed a funeral procession and everyone RUSHED to one side of the bus to see who had died. And if you Vermonters aren't used to being bumped into, touched, or even hugged, hopefully you will be after this trip. :-)
