Diner's Guide

A few days ago, I was talking to another waiter at my restaurant about all the common stupid things that customers do that are basically bad restaurant "etiquette." After some discussion, we decided that it might be a good idea to write some sort of dining out guide, maybe even "The Idiot's Guide to Dining Out" or something like that. Here are a ( Read more... )

Most places, you have to be seated. Most places. My diner, well, they're quick to people at the door, but it's not really a big deal where you sit. I sit in the same spot anyway, so...

Every place is different - and if they know you, they know you. We have a couple of regulars who come in (with reservations) and they always get the same table so they practically seat themselves. It just depends on the place, really.

I mean. It's kind of default, no? Maybe I'm just so conditioned from all the "Please Wait To Be Seated", or the hostess counter being right in front of the door when you enter. Diners, you can seat yourself. Or the occasional place that says, "Go seat yourself."

Right - a lot of places have signs. We don't because it's a fine dining restaurant but if there is a sign, you default to that. Otherwise, there are certain places where you seat yourself and others where you don't.

May I add 6. Do not assume that the restaurant serves meals tailored to your particular dietary restriction. If you don't like the food we serve go somewhere else. I had a hugely obese guy came in once and he demanded that we should serve sushi made with brown rice. He also had a nerve to ask "why do you serve only junk food?"

TOTALLY! I get so frustrated when people come in with all these obscure restrictions and then expect us to bend over backwards. If you can't eat what we serve, EAT AT HOME!!

I will definitely add it - this is going to be a work in progress for a long time :P

My other pet peeve is separate bills. It gets really annoying when there are like 15 people at a table.

lol, all of these additions are GREAT! I'll have to add them in later when I have a minute :) I'm seriously going to keep adding to this list whenever I get a good suggestion and/or idea.

And, as I told one of my friends in the customers suck forum, there will be a whole section on children :P
