~PROM~

An idea just occurred to me, that it'd be REALLY COOL if I could find a place that sells prom dresses and donates the money to a cause/charity/what-have-you. I'd feel a lot better about spending all that money if I knew it wasn't just self indulgent. But I can't find anything like that on google! It's very discouraging. Do any of you know of  ( Read more... )

I AGREEEEE

That could be a really cool idea.

Too bad I don't think any of us are excellent enough sewers to make prom dresses and then sell them for a percentage of charitable donation.

Yeahhhh lol, it'd be a cool thing to start but you'd need people with time and skill. and i'm really more in the market to find it already existing somewhere, due to my current prommy needs

Actually, a high school in North Vancouver did that- they went to their alumni, friends, neighbours etc and collected all their old prom dresses that they've only worn once, and set up a "charity store" in their school, and the students got to buy designer dresses second-hand for much cheaper, and they donated the money they made to a charity. You could totally do that with your grade! It'd be pretty epic. As for my school, there's a movement going around to come dressed for prom casually instead, and donate the money you'd spend getting an outfit to a charity instead :D

yes sirreeeee, it is :D
Especially since most people just get gowns they wear ONCE and leave in their wardrobes for the rest of eternity. Hahaha but I can't really say anything because I got a dress already :D

Yeahhh for sure, I read about drives on google where they collected all those dresses out of women's closets and then sold them cheaply to needy high school girls, but i dont know if the proceeds went to charity or anything. plus i think they were more typically run by moms as a neighborhood thing, rather than students and done within the school....IN ANY CASSSSE idk, I think I just want to come by a prom dress differently than I usually shop; thrift store, indie shop, charity-thing, etc. like i don't want to just buy it at a normal store where i usually shop, that sells the dress in massive quantities. i've already got this betsey johnson number lounging in my closet, that i got for free as a sort of hand-me-down from the family my mom works for and it's very prom-ready and i fit in it surprisingly quite well for a size 4 -- and the thing is i like it, but it doesn't feel like my prom dress. i'm considering donating it to my school's costume room at the end of the year, though, so whether I wear it or not it's STORY will continue!

We did this at my high school! XD Shamelessly feminine, we called it Operation: Pretty Princess. We collected alumni's dresses, accessories, etc. and asked other schools to do the same and then held a big sale with the other schools in our library and you got to choose one of a list of charities to donate the money to. Twas awesome, when's your prom?

Huhhhh, that's really great! I like that you gave choices for different charities. My prom's in June actually, so theoretically there might be time to organize something, but I don't really know how you'd go about getting something like that started sooo, who knows.
