I found some interesting statistics while doing research for my thesis....

Twenty-six percent of eighth grade students cannot read material necessary for daily living, and overall, 68 percent of middle and high school students score below the proficient level (Faggella-Luby & Deshler, 2008).

That is not 26% of special ed students but 26% of ALL ( Read more... )

I have to wonder how much of this failure is due to teachers being pressured (by parents and administration) to pass failing kids, so as not to harm their self-esteem.

Don't look at me like that, I saw it myself at my kid's school.

Oh I am not looking at you crazy because I totally know where you are coming from on that. I know that we are not allowed to give zeros or below a 50 even if the student does absolutely nothing.

I know that at a certain age grade level committees are encourage to "grade place" students.

It is terrible to have a 16, 17 or 18 yr old eighth grader. It is terrible to have to worry if that older adolescent might then use his/her knowledge of "worldly" things to harass, molest or bully the students who are the right age.

I had a 17 yr old eighth grader two years ago. He dropped out that summer, is working a manual labor job and on his second baby. But at least he is working and taking care of his responsibilities and getting a GED. A lot of them don't and blame the system for the rest of their lives.

I get them in college and I can tell you they still let them in (community college level)with out being read or write at even a high school level ... I'm starting to make my students write papers on subjects just to give them more of a reason to read and write.
