I was lucky enough to get to see it too. I drove 2 hours to see it. I was amazed at the physicality and emotion of BC's performance. I was drawn into the show and was not even aware of the people around me for the duration. I have tried to describe the experience to others and just can not. For this reason I hope it comes out on DVD. My friend could have gone with me on the second night, but like I told her, I have seen Cumberbatch play a man, I want to see him play a creature. I am so glad I did. And I want to see him as the Creator too.
That sounds pretty heavy stuff. I can't really comment on BC, because I've never seen him. I'm not quite sure what all the fuss is about lol However, it does seem that he's very serious about his craft, which is a definite bonus. I shall check out Sherlock :)
In fairness, I don't think I'll be watching this. I'd probably find it too upsetting, and I'm on the receiving end of some unpleasant humanity at the moment, so I don't need to be reminded how vile humans can be. I can't watch The Elephant Man for the same reason.
I have watched both versions (repeated!) live last year, so I can tell you: I loved BC's Creature more than JLM's Creature, and I loved BC's Victor more than JLM's Victor, but strangely, BC's Creature and BC's Victor only worked so well when there was JLM's Victor and JLM's Creature to play off against. So I must say, if you have an opportunity to watch the JLM Creature version, please do!
Not to say I didn't like JLM's performance! Just, well, BC does kind of capture your heart as the Creature, and as Victor, he added in so many small little details that you can't help being both enraptured and horrified at him at the same time. So he really draws you in.
Reading your review made me remember all those nights watching Frankenstein again!
Thank you so much for your review! I came here via cumberbatchfans.
I saw it in Munich last night, but with Benedict as Frankenstein and Jonny Lee Miller as the Creature. I felt as if I had run a marathon afterwards. It was a very intense experience, deeply moving. My friend whom I had dragged along (she's not really a BC fan, but she likes him as Sherlock) was impressed as well. It is very hard to describe the experience with words. Even the long train ride home today wasn't enough to come up with the right ones.
Now I can't wait to see the other version which will be shown in four weeks. After reading your review I'm very glad I decided not to listen to other people's "advice" but booked a ticket for the other screening on a whim. I'll have to get up at 5 a.m., but now I know it will be worth it.
My only regret is that I'll never be able to see it live, but maybe there will be a DVD one day. I haven't given up yet. ;)
I saw the taped Frankenstein version with BC as the Creature and it totally broke my heart. I was captivated from the get go and could only mouth the word "WOW" as I watched BC spasm and flail around on the stage like a baby fawn. You realize just what Victor did creating life. BC did a great job showing the synapses firing and the brain trying to get control over the limbs. I couldn't imagine doing that NIGHT after NIGHT after NIGHT!!! My god. BC is awesome. I was worn out just watching him.
I too found the color blind casting of the father and cousin very interesting and made her death more heartbreaking. I really loved her interaction with the creature because she was the first person to look upon him and actually "care".
Wish I could have seen this LIVE. I think it would have been awesome. I'm just happy I got to see it on the big screen.
