My nana gave me a bunch of crocheting books. I just looked though them they have some nice patterns, but the fashions are cera 1950-80s. It'll be good for me to learn how to crochet from a pattern. I prefer to lay the afghan out on a flat surface. Then, I put a wet towel on top of it--this gets the fibers moist. From there, I carefully run an iron over the wet towel so that the steam relaxes the fibers and helps it to flatten out. You might have to experiment with it a bit, but that's the gist of it. From there, let the afghan lie flat for awhile to dry. It might still be a little ripply, but once you fold it, it will start to even out.
