Fishing for instance was a pastime handed down from father to son since the beginning of time. Sheldon knew the history of the “sport” as well as the proper way to cast the line, what fish were native to the region and even how to properly flay a fish. He had never caught a fish though. Fortunately, Penny’s father didn’t seem to mind Sheldon just watching him fish.
The older man sat quietly on the small dock behind his house, reeling in and casting anew every fifteen minutes. Sheldon, having realized that it was a great show of faith from Penny to have him meet her father, something few of her past boyfriends had ever done, occasionally broke the silence to ask what kind of fish the man had caught or where he had fished previously. Mostly he just sat and watched, just as he’d done with his own father.
The sound of tires crunching gravel alerted him to Penny’s return, but he still waited on the other man to make the first move.
“Reckon we ought to help the ladies with their bags,” the man said with a small grin as he reeled his hook in.
“That would probably be for the best,” Sheldon said as he stood up to follow the man.
“You boys catch anything?” Penny’s mother asked.
“Not so much as a boot,” Penny’s father joked, giving Sheldon a conspiratorial wink as he did so.
Sheldon turned to Penny for some clue as to what the wink meant, but she only smiled back at him.
Apparently he had passed the test.
