I have graduated with an MA in linguistics! The advantage of an enormous, faceless, anonymous university is that it is impossible for everyone to graduate at once. And just out of general curiousity - how big is a big university? I discussed big and small with my own professor Oakes the other week, and his small university was about the same size of my big one.
I determine small and big by undergraduate population. Small is less than maybe 4000 undergrads, and big is more than 10,000*. When you're talking graduate programs, the size of the university becomes less important than the size of the department.
*Numbers have been invented not quite off the top of my head.
