Yesterday I went to Whole Foods and parked next to a car with a dog in it. In the summer. 85 degrees out. Window was half-open, but seriously, who still does this, after all the info. out there about dogs in cars in the summer? I didn't know what to do. Having a dog of my own has totally brought out the maternal instinct. I would have gone in and told the service desk.

I have never seen this myself (thank the gods) but I have friends who have. They have tried many things, without much success: calling the police immediately (probably your best bet, but still not very fast), going into the store to the manager/service desk/security, or waiting to harangue the owners (the most dangerous option).
Maybe the news story about cooking a steak on the dashboard will get through to people?? Probably not, though. We can't stop hurting our own species, for crying out loud. By the time we figure that out we will have killed off every other species on the planet. (okay I should just not comment anymore, I'm just a barrel of laughs)

It's like the people who take their kids to the laundromat and then are nowhere around when the kids start pulling heavy objects down on their heads. This used to happen to me all the time in my youth -- I was always rescuing small children. At least that was more straightforward, since you could reach the children --- harder when you can't get at the dog.
