Thoughts on napping

Entre el vivir y el sonar
hay una tercera cosa.
Adivinala.

-Antonio Machado

(sorry, I'm not so good at figuring out accents.  Good thing I'm not in Norway, eh?)

So I always thought the third thing was imagination or something like that.  Now I'm not sure, because I've discovered this weird, trance-like state of mind which I call "napping."  Admittedly, ( Read more... )

Astrophysics! wow. I've been having really vivid dreams lately that leave me exhausted when I wake up but it's frustrating because I don't remember them. Sigh.

These aren't really dreams, it's more like crazy weird stream of consciousness. Like, maybe my brain is doing this all the time and I just don't usually listen?

Wow, that sounds really interesting.

When I'm having trouble falling asleep, I know I'm getting close when the frantic pace of my mind starts shutting down and I just involuntarily start thinking random things that don't make any sense in conjunction with each other. It's kind of like what you're describing except not nearly as sophisticated.

That's kind of what it is, the frantic pace of my mind. But for the first time I've really stopped to listen to it. Sometimes there are so many things/conversations/music going on at once, but if I listen instead of trying to shut it off, it's very interesting indeed.

That's awesomely interesting. Nothing like that for me except...Monday I called in sick which is unusual, and I slept most of the day. And my cat naps included: Popoki. He was still dead. He just visited me every morning, in the dreams I dreamt in my restless napping on Monday. He was real to me but no one else. Odd. Definitely not astrophysics, or even Peter Sagal.

Aw. I miss Popoki too even though I never met him. Naps are always best with cats, though live ones are cuddlier.

I like this post. :) Your experiences sound really interesting. If you reach enlightenment, let us know, and say hi to the horned toads for me... do you see the radio show people, or just hear them?

It's far from enlightenment. I really more hear them, like a radio broadcast, but occasionally, because I know we are at a cocktail party, I'll get a mental image. By the way, I speak pretty good French to Gerard, and I haven't taken French since seventh grade.
