Who knows where some of these things come from.

I don't think Marnie has any sink-a-phobia, or any bad sink experiences.

But she has been taught by example to drive the plot along with the introduction of conflict.

So maybe the sink functions as a metaphor for the rough and tumble nature of the universe, or something.

This actually was based on a true experience of loss from Grandma's stopperless sink. She re-told Mimi about it Friday night as we put the girls down at Grandma's house. The incident happened months ago I think!
