Right, so this was written for the third annual OC sentence challenge.

My sentence was “Seth loses his hearing (momentarily or permanently)”

Seth shifted in his sleep and Ryan stroked his hair gently. Ryan hadn’t slept for more than an hour since it had happened 3 months before. Seth had started coming into his room and sleeping with him looking for comfort.

Ryan could remember the night he had found out what had happened. He had been writing a lab report and Sandy had entered the pool house. He told Ryan that Seth had been at a gas station and as he had left some drunken idiot had lit a cigarette and consequently set fire to the station which had led to an explosion.

Seth had been pretty badly burnt but the worst part was that the sound of the explosion had done something to Seth’s ears. Ryan couldn’t remember what, it didn’t matter but now Seth was deaf.

Now in the dark Seth could only find comfort when he was with Ryan. The two had been dating a couple of weeks before the accident. Ryan couldn’t sleep because when all this started and he did sleep Seth had had nightmares and it had taken Ryan ages to calm him down. When Ryan didn’t sleep he could see the warning signs and it made everything easier.

Ryan held Seth closer it was so quiet in the Cohen household without Seth’s ramblings. Now that he couldn’t hear himself he never spoke. Ryan had also started talking less and less. It was easier to communicate with Seth when he didn’t speak.

Ryan was the only one Seth could really understand. He didn’t know whether it was because Sandy and Kirsten were too busy feeling sorry for Seth to pay attention at therapy where they were learning the art of communication. Or it could just be because Ryan never really spoke anyway so Seth was used to reading his body language.

As Seth couldn’t understand anyone else he and Ryan were inseparable. They never left each others sides. Quite frankly Ryan was disappointed in Sandy and Kirsten. Ryan could tell they were making Seth feel isolated and alone which was why Ryan made such an effort to include Seth in all he did.

They still played video games together, they could read comics together, they could watch films with subtitles and they could even still go to the pier, Seth was still Seth. All Sandy and Kirsten could see was that Seth was now deaf and they forgot about the qualities he still had.

Seth stirred in his sleep and woke up. Chocolate brown eyes met Ryan’s blue jewels. Ryan smiled and gave Seth a good morning kiss which Seth gladly returned. The two then lay in silence together enjoying the company.

Eventually Ryan decided it was time to get up and sat up stretching. Seth smiled up at him. He pointed to himself, put his hands on his heart and pointed at Ryan. Ryan smiled and kissed him.

The sound of Sandy knocking on the pool house door broke them apart and a few seconds later Sandy popped his head around the door. Seth looked down. “Morning guys!” Sandy came into the room smiling. Ryan gave a half wave and climbed out of his bed and grabbed some clothes. He motioned towards the shower. He knew Sandy wanted some alone time with Seth as he was trying to reconnect with him. He must have realized how down he was making Seth feel.

Sandy sighed. Why did Seth have to go to that particular gas station? Now he didn’t speak and neither did Ryan really. The house was silent. Still after 3 months, Kirsten cried to herself to sleep. The house was broken just because some man got drunk and wanted a cigarette. Sandy didn’t know what to do.

He looked down at Seth who was twiddling Ryan’s duvet in his fingers. Sandy plonked down next to him on the bed. At the movement Seth slowly looked sideways and met his father’s eyes.

Sandy looked down at his now silent son and had to fight back the tears. Why ha this happened to them? He couldn’t even communicate with his own son.

Oh God his dad was going to cry again. He was deaf not blind. Why couldn’t they be like Ryan and just treat him normally? How come Ryan’s the only one he could turn to and not his parents?

They made him feel so alone. More like a freak that a human being. All he wanted was to hear again.

Now Summer practically ignored him by avoiding him altogether. Well at least he still had Ryan. His own mother even avoided him now.

Sandy mouthed something to him which Seth didn’t catch. He shrugged. “Breakfast,” Sandy mouthed again pointing towards the kitchen. Seth understood that but hated how dramatised his father was being. What happened to the father he had that understood everything Seth meant? The mother who was willing to sacrifice anything for him? In one stupid moment everything changed. He pointed to the bathroom door and mouthed Ryan. So they both settled back and waited.

Finally after what seemed like an eternity, Ryan stumbled out of the bathroom dressed in his clothes for the day.

“Hey kid, you ready for breakfast?” Sandy asked. Ryan nodded and went over to Seth. Sandy watched as Ryan made a face that Sandy didn’t get and they burst out laughing. Must be an inside joke. How did Ryan do that?

The three entered the kitchen. Ryan was holding Seth’s hand and leading him through the glass doors. Kirsten watched them smiling sadly. She remembered when Seth was little and she held his hand walking down the street. Now even in his new state he wouldn’t be seen dead holding her hand.

If this were old times he’d probably be rambling on to Ryan and Sandy about Summer right now. The family were trapped now in an everlasting silence. Seth never spoke, Ryan hardly ever spoke. It seemed like every time Ryan looked at her and Sandy there was disappointment in his eyes. He was disappointed that they weren’t treating Seth as parents should, how they used to.

Ryan believed that that Seth was the same but the Seth she knew was loud, sarcastic and most of all talkative.

She got them out some bowls and spoons and watched as Ryan passed a bowl to She and pointed to the cereal cupboard. Seth showed some action and Ryan obviously knew what he meant as he grabbed a cereal box and gave it to Seth. How did he do that?

Kirsten spent the whole breakfast time observing every move they did together. They could practically read each other’s thoughts. Seth looked at her suddenly and she looked away. A sigh escaped his lips and all she wanted to do was give him a huge hug and tell him everything will be okay and that she loved him.

Just as she was about to move over to him, the phone suddenly screamed at her making Ryan jump and she grabbed it.

Ryan watched Kirsten leave the room quickly followed by Sandy who said a quick good bye before leaving. Ryan saw Seth stare down at his bowl sadly. His brown eyes filled with unshed tears.

Ryan gathered him up in his arms and kissed his curls. If Sandy and Kirsten weren’t going to appreciate Seth and see that Seth’s disability wasn’t a curse but just a new burst of life then he was going to be extra nice to Seth. Seth deserved it he thought as he started to nibble at Seth’s ear.

Thanks so much to ctoan for managing this challenge
