The dog.  She is sick.  I am sort of stuck. Alix is only 5, she is crazy and super active.  About 4 months ago she started with a drippy nose- one side, gross but just basically drippy.  It progress one day into a nose bleed that landed us at UPENN's animal hospital.  Lot's of money and tests later we ruled out the scary stuff (awaiting final ( Read more... )

Funny how grad school eats your life and yet there it is still...waiting for you to deal with it. I'm sorry to hear things are so crazed but still it is not horrible stuff...just annoying. Jake and I repeated over and over during his schooling that this is only temporary (as is Erin's exhaustion). Good luck with Jury Duty. Jake and I both got called during school and both squeaked by with just a day of service so there is hope.

how ironic that JD seems to coincide with grad school, eh? I'll keep my fingers crossed for one day- that, actually would be nice.

Where are you in your process? last I heard it was decision making time to purchase or go live....

We skipped Sept to finish getting the known donor set up. We are ready for the October cycle to...well...'go live.' Strangely, my next ovulation with be on or around with my 33rd birthday.

There is a little part of me that believes that this will all fall through. Jake is walking on air about the whole thing and is positive everything will work out fine.

i also have a crazy schedule this semester and school and my internship are kicking my ass. I'm done more than this before, but this time around I'm just finding it much much harder.

Good luck with jury duty. When I was called last semester (grad school and jury duty, right?!) I just had to sit around for a day. You can call and reschedule the jury duty ahead of time if you need to - they'll give you a couple of months if it falls on a day you can't do. It was really easy. That might push it to next semester for you.

I think you'll be able to get off really easily. The nurse thing helps, esp talking about critical care nursing. You'll have to fill out two questionnaires...one about your fairness for criminal trials and one for civil. Basically I think you just need to answer that you don't think that you can be fair (go on a tangent about your thoughts on the death penalty and if you're not all for it you will probably get dismissed if there's any chance of a capital case). Also point out that with your schedule alternating between days and nights that you don't necessarily feel like you are going to be alert enough to be up all day hearing a case and then working nights. The fact that you're in the medical profession makes it much harder to get picked for a civil case because lots of them are medical malpractice and they don't really want nurses on those juries ( ... )

Ah, that's smart. I was prepared to say insane, racist, ignorant things to get out. The angle of medicine and lawyers in the family and Erin's job is a better approach. Thank you for saving my dignity. we'll see.

Yeah the family stuff will be good but I think the more you can stress your own work and perhaps your own capabilities (working night shifts either right before or during the trial, in particular) the better. I didn't get booted even though my brother is a federal law enforcement agent AND I've done lots of work with victims. But I think you play the medical angle of your own work and you might be ok.

But you can also carefully answer the questions about whether you would be more or less likely to believe a police officer's testimony just because he's a cop (say you're less likely to believe them purely because of their position). And develop some important personal belief that would prevent you from fairly listening to facts.

I think you can go down with dignity. Just be smart!
