Aspects of British Culture Poll Explanation

Jan 16, 2017 23:31

I asked my non-British readers which of the following (important or perhaps less so) aspects of British culture they were at least vaguely familiar with. Sixteen people took part in the survey, which I think is enough to draw some conclusions. Here are the results of the poll:

Cadbury's Creme Eggs 15

'Carry On' films 9

Slade 3

The Raleigh Chopper 3

That was a good poll.
I heard that Christmas song hundreds of times probably but I never knew who it was by. But that's probably true for many of the songs I know.

I once heard it drily observed that one took his spotted dick with clotted cream, which sounds even funnier to an American.

It sounds pretty funny to a Brit too! In fact, it's the sort of joke you'd get in a Carry On film...

I knew that Carry On Cleo referenced the Burton / Taylor film, but not that it used the same sets and costumes.

And I didn't know about cream teas in the Lebanon. I did know, though, that the place name Leicester might include a Phoenician element.

Ahh, I said "originally intended for" not "the same"! Apparently the Burton / Taylor film was originally going to be shot at Pinewood (where most of the Carry On films were shot) but relocated at great expense to Rome during production and after sets had been built. And supposedly they left costumes behind too. Or at least that's the version I've heard.

For Americans, Quiet Riot had a top ten hit in 1983 with Cum On Feel The Noize, which was an almost identical cover of an original Slade hit from ten years before.

The Oasis cover is worth looking up too.
