Yield To Total Elation

I told myself I was too daunted by the coursebook to even think about my first semester, but yesterday I caved and planned out four whole years at Swarthmore. The last two are admittedly sketchy, but it's a comforting sort of document, and provides for my learning German, double-majoring in Art History and Sociology/Anthropology, and effectively ( Read more... )

Don't get too attached to your schedule, but, on the other hand, make sure you lay the groundwork for anything you want to do. Bear in mind that some courses are offered once a year, once every two years, or less. Also remember that your first semester is pass-fail. This is a good time to see whether you like something without much risk, take really annoying courses that you need for a major, or take something on the hard side. I wasn't really trying to do this with my frosh fall courses, but I ended up with a history course (no thanks, but necessary to pick up the AP credit), Chem 10 (ugh, but necessary for engin), Math 16H (the hardest math I've ever done - and a course that told me that I wasn't going to be a math major), and Jazz Improv (a great course, but I'm glad the grade wasn't a factor - much better to be able to take it for fun).

I was re-reading some of my journals from my first three years at Swat. Approximately every three months, I have a new four-year (or however-many years-I-have-left) plan written down, and each one tends to be vastly different from the previous plan.

My advice is not to worry too much about taking the classes you will need for whatever your ultimate plan is now. When I got to Swat I was planning on majoring in engineering, and so I started off taknig all sorts of Math and Sciencey things that I thought I would need, rather than doing the liberal arts dabbling thing. This is how I ended up as an art major with about 10 credits of natural sciences that I didn't actually need to take. I'm trying to make up for it my senior year by taking random classes in departments I've never taken classes in before, just to be crazy.

It's funny, my freshman year courses are almost entirely non-departmental. Watch me fall in love with Physics...

(But the circus! Wow. Pure brilliance. Maybe my brother will teach me to juggle, or I can swing on trapezes over the Crum.)

Good God, woman... and I got freaked out by a placement exam.
Though I now feel oddly (and sickly) better about myself.
I keep telling myself that I'll get into graduate school, get my masters (ooo PhD) and become a fabulous opera singer, even though I have no idea if my planned transfer will work out in oder to make my plans even remotely possible. Not jumping the gun or anything...
