Hmm... so I'm switching my E-mail over to GMail from IAState, and I don't know if I'm backwards but I'm used to filtering incoming mail into folders for easy sorting (and a cleaner inbox). You can set rules to not just apply labels but to also auto archive which doesn't mark as read but does mean it skips the main inbox, should be exactly what you want.

I saw that, but will it still show up as "New Mail" if it's automatically archived? I still want to see that I HAVE received them, just sorted.
