Old Photograph Effect
This is a tutorial on how to get that old photograph look.
I took a stock photo of pink tulips that I got at stock.xchng and reduced it to this size.
Do whatever it is you do to prepare your base and get the coloring you want. For this tutorial I want to focus on the old photograph look so I didn't do anything fancy. This is all I did.
Sharpen once.
Duplicate base layer, set to screen at 50% opacity.
Duplicate base layer again. Drag to top and set to soft light.
Now, how to get that old photograph look. I'm not saying this is the only way to do it, but this is one way and it's very easy.
I took this texture of old brown torn paper, reduced it from it's original size and dragged it on top of my tulips. Sorry I can't remember where I got this texture. If anyone recognizes it please tell me If you are looking for paper textures try stock.xchng or one of the many lj communities where people post textures.
Set it to multiply. Then you can mess around with the opacity if you want.
This is at 100% opacity
You can stop there or you can duplicate the paper layer. On the duplicated layer use your "polygonal lasso tool" and select a portion out of the middle. Like this.
Go to select>feather. Set the feather radius to 20 pixels or around that. The jagged lines will soften. Now hit the "delete" key.
You can lower the opacity on this layer so the edges aren't so dark. It will look something like this.
That's about it. You can do whatever else you want to the graphic of course. Use the "burn tool" to darken the edge a little more. Add brushes (like a polaroid mask or brush), text, a border, etc.
Hope this gives people some ideas. I'd love to see what you come up with. :)
