My dad walked in the kitchen and said, "You can't do that! You'll never know when it's done!"
"No, I think it's working," I replied. "Look--there's stiff peaks and everything!"
"That's not how you know it's done!" Dad exclaimed. "You know it's done when your palms start bleeding!"

The only meringue story I have to share is that a friend tried making it for a potluck once, and it was an epic fail. Didn't rise at all and was just...hard and bleh. So instead we had chocolate covered pears, and a melty chocolate fight ensued. That's how MY dinner parties work! Good times.
