Discuss things here! phnx_rising February 21 2011, 20:07:08 UTC
What are some of the problems people have had learning to use LiveJournal? Comment here and I'll try to help!

I think that LJ was problematic because I have never heard of it until it was introduced in class. The concept was different and all the roles, voting, picking a person to act like seemed confusing and overwhelming. We also haven't had much class time to discuss and ask questions. I think that if this were a class that met more frequently then many of the problems we had could have been eliminated.

Another problem was that this social media site is a bit primitive when compared to facebook or Twitter etc. Many of us are "tech savvy" but this site takes us way back and in a way is harder to be active on.

My first try on Lj was not successful, so I am ready to give it another try!

It's so crazy--I had thought that since LJ was older it would be easier. I thought that since your generation is super-media-savvy that it would be easy to pick up LJ. I hadn't realized that LJ being so antique would make it harder! Epic Fail on my part.

I really did underestimate how complex it would be learn LJ. I knew the game would be a shock--but I thought you'd be able to focus on the game. Totally didn't see the LJ thing as being a possible problem.

I'm glad you are ready/willing to give it another try. Maybe having the chance to see how things play out here will help a bit!

thanks for the comment

How to "argue" in a mafia game! phnx_rising February 21 2011, 20:15:34 UTC
Some of you weren't sure what kinds of arguments to make in the mafia game. Take a look at this comment thread to see how this sort of works.

Interesting. Everyone is so into it! Do they make the argument based on what character they are/ based on how their character would think? If so, I wish I would have picked a better person to be in the beginning. Perhaps someone more opinionated then it would be easier to vote, make an argument etc. Were you a part of this group? the writing and tone of it is similar to your writing :)or does everyone who play write that way?

All the threads are hard to follow since there are so many. Wish the formatting of the website/threads was a little different then it could be clearer to see what everyone was saying.

How people argue will reflect the "tone" or "attitude" of their character in some ways... so while the LOGIC is the player's, the "tone" is the characters. So Lucifer's posts are often very cryptic and blunt. I wasn't part of that particular thread but if you look at jjmafia for the last few days you'll see some of my posts. Many of us end up sounding similar because at some point we all get really focused on the logic and arguments!

At one point someone played Giselle from the movie "Enchanted" so she'd make her arguments in this very gentle almost innocent sort of way. All "Oh....I don't want to be negative.... but..." Very cute!

I agree that the comment threads can be really confusing! You do get used to it if you spend enough time on LJ!
