Ok so I went down this weekend to NYC.  It was a long-awaited birthday present from my mother and step-father.  My trips were becoming annual (went four years running until 2006).  I have seen 42nd Street, Assassins, Spamalot, ...Spelling Bee, and Barefoot... with many talented performers and lots of anecdotes. I really appreciated your analysis of Macbeth. Thanks for such intelligent commentary. I disagree with you on some points and agree with you on others. I did think the echoes with the witches was distracting at times (and at times cool).

Consistency would have been the bets approach on the effect or a single usage to enhance a specific moment but there was no dissernable pattern- and so it was distracting... at least to me. I spent too much time trying to sort the effect from the dialog and then trying to attach it to their characters...

I did want to mention that I did agree with your observation about the blocking. However, remember a couple points...

1. Most community players are not strong enough actors to convey a scene with a facial expression. Additionally, community actors want the audience recognition from facing forward.

2. Most performances spaces do not have the audience views that the Lyceum has.

I don't disagree with you, I've just found that it takes very special people to "back act" as a choreographer once dubbed it.
