So today could have gone much better. My coworker and fellow contractor left a laptop out overnight and found it gone this morning. Several floors reported things missing, so of course everyone is paranoid as hell. My boss kept me (and only me) out of most of the conversations about it today, so I'm half expecting a "where were you on the night of May 23rd" talk to come soon...
I'm also getting really irritated by people's constant comments about my age. They regularly refer to me as the "new kid", or blow me off with "isn't that cute.." expressions. Even my boss, who knows I'm 27 and have been working in office environments for 10 years, started a sentence the other day with "As you start to enter the workforce, you'll realize that...". Another coworker means well but goes over the top with "good job!!" and a thumbs up any time I say anything the least bit intelligent, which makes me want to keep my mouth shut. Another example: a user I did some work for, middle-aged black woman with tendency to speak her thoughts out loud, popped off randomly with "aww, look at you, all growed up! (sic)"..
So, the comments from today that fried me came from a user named Ingrid. The first time I met her, I thought she was "special" because she's unnervingly cheerful and talks to everyone the way you'd talk to a 2 year old. I asked about her later and was told there was nothing wrong with her in that sense, just that she was overly nice. So I've been nice back to her, but I've noticed that she makes snide comments with most of the things she says. I had to do inventory today, which granted is a shit job, but it needed to be done by our department and I'm the low man on the totem pole. I told her I was on her floor taking inventory, and she said in a sickenly sweet tone "oh, that's just great! At least it gets you off the streets..", later followed by "so how's your biiiiiiiiig project coming along?"
I don't know what to do about it, so I'm taking a general opinion poll from anyone that has one. Has anyone else has had this problem at a job? I know it's a lot harder for me to articulate since hypoglycemia smacked me down, so is it because I sound like I'm 18 and retarded? Maybe it's my workplace and/or government that's retarded.. :) Any suggestions for dealing with it without getting into trouble would be appreciated..
