That may be where I came across it. I was passing by a television set showing a film in which a young student athlete recites part of this in a gymnasium to some sort of teacher or coach who has been betrayed by the school board. I was en route elsewhere, so I know nothing about the film involved, but I determined to find the full quote.
The statement "There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you" is something many people I know need to hear -- including me on occasion.
The statement "There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you" is one of the more radically defiant, socially controversial statements I've heard, totally at odds with the American pressure to shrink and self-diminish until you accomodate the lowest common denominator of the comfort zones around you.
I think the sign we are selling out and muggling out is when we adopt the American business creed, 'We only employ those who shrink so their bosses won't feel insecure around them'. On the other hand, shrunken souls are seldom without employment . . . *wry laugh*
That movie was, indeed Coach Carter. It is one of those feel-good movies based on fact about a man making a difference in his own community. I enjoy it, own it, and have watched the movie many times.
