It really depends on what you're looking for, I think. Yeah, I -do- miss no sales tax in Oregon [ amongst small other things, like climate ] but the health care here FAR beats 8 cents to my dollar.
Everyone is looking for something different and the people thrive in the various locations.
Not saying that you're right in some aspects, but NY isn't so terrible. At least in my opinion.

the health thing is definitely true, buffalo's got one of the highest rates of asthma & thyroid problems.
