For some people, it's a relaxation/escapism thing. Some people just like being a Troll [in the internet sense] and causing a commotion. Some people do it as more of a social network, which, if you're doing it right, it actually can be. [ I've made a LOT of close friends over the years. Ones I've met up with in RL, loaned money to, cried for and who cried for me. ]
No one really says it "helps" you as a kicker. It's subjective.
I know Warden starter playing because after his leg injury in the navy, he could barely walk, and it gave him a way to communicate with other people without the hassle of being out and about with his leg convulsing, and as shallow as it may sound, he could make a character and jump again. =/ It took his mind off constant pain.
