From what I remember of Augusta it was pretty with many Old South touches. Seemed a bit sleepy at that time but, of course, that was 15 years ago and I'm sure things have changed quite a bit since then ;-P. There was a really nice river walk along the big river that runs by/thru the city (pretty sure that's the Savannah River).

Yup! Should be an adventure! And if you really don't like it, no worries, you'll be moving again somewhere down the line. I hope Jay ends up liking the new work!

I've heard that there are some really bad parts of Augusta to stay away from but that's everywhere. Hell, I've now lived in Lowell, Worcester, and Fayetteville...I've seen "bad areas" :-)

And yeah, we'll only be there until the fall anyway. Then it's off to another location for a while. Let's hope this all doesn't change at the last minute!

Yup, that's the case everywhere. A little research of which parts to avoid and you should be fine.

Just realized you'll be there through the summer - GAH!!! Well, you will get the experience of a deep South summer. So, that's gonna really suck on some days (erm, weeks) so mentally prepare yourself ;-P. Plan a trip or two back to New England in August for sure if you can. And definitely get a place with good working central AC and make sure your car's AC is in good working order.

But, hey, Spring should be gorgeous down there! Enjoy!

I'm glad it sounds like this ended up being a blessing in disguise. Here's hoping it's the adventure you deserve!

I hope so :-). I'm at least trying to look at it like that! :-) And hey, it seems like another Boston bellydancer who I knew briefly when I lived in Mass will be joining me in Georgia in June. So at least I'll know someone!
