Elementary Rolling Remix, anyone?

Sep 04, 2016 12:44

A few months back, I participated in MCU Rolling Remix, and had a blast. I want to have the same fun in all my fandoms, and I’m definitely willing to try and run an event like that in Elementary. So this is a post to see if anyone else would be willing to play with me!

Basically, there will be a seed fic, something written specifically for the remix ( Read more... )

1. yes;

3. yes;
4. YES;
5. what's the ideal minimum number of participants? can someone write more than one round? and/or do(es) the seed fic writer(s) also remix down the line?

My main fear is that not enough people will sign up, after my recent attempts to get folks to write Elementary flopped. or maybe I've just worn out my welcome as a recruiter?

Hee, that is my main fear too! But I'd think the minimum could be pretty small, like 5-6 people, if we're only doing one stream of remixes. I hadn't thought of allowing people to remix more than once. . . that's definitely an idea, especially if we have a number of participants that doesn't break up neatly, but *is* large enough that there's some distance (like at least two fics worth?) between a person's turns, or if we're just a little shy of having multiple streams of remixes and so a single person can be slotted into two streams. Definitely things to consider!

1-4: yes!

5: What about people who haven't seen all four seasons? How feasible is it for them to play?

I forgot I was going to raise that question in the post! I was thinking definitely barring spoilers for season 5, assuming this goes long enough that season 5 starts airing, but I was kind of thinking it's been long enough that canon through season 4 was all fair game? And I mean, given the no restrictions on characters/relationships/genre rule, I would think that you could still play even without watching all of canon -- if you get handed a fic that deals with stuff from parts you haven't seen, you can just use it as a jumping off point to a part of canon you do know. But I'll edit the post to ask that!

Re (4) Yeah, that's the idea. Even if you get handed a fic that's about your NOTP, you can write the premise for a pairing you like better, or take an offhand mention of a minor character doing something you find interesting in the background and write a fic about that, or even just take the theme and run with it in a totally separate direction. It's very much an everything goes style of remixing!

this sounds pretty fun i would probably be up for joining

maybe it would be cool if it didn't have to be only fic? like you could do a drawing fanmix or graphic based on the previous thing idk?

The difficulty I foresee with that is that it becomes hard to see what characterizes the piece as a *remix* if you switch media. Generally fic remixes involve something like a POV change, or a main character/relationship change, or a new story with the same theme; if you transition from a fic to, say, a fanmix, where you're already translating the original fic into a song list, how do you change something about it to qualify as a remix? And then, when the fanmix is handed to the next person in line, without tags to even indicate a pairing much less a summary/theme, what can they do with it?

I don't know. I'm sure there are creative ways around this? But I've never seen a remix challenge that was anything but fic-only, because it's a whole 'nother level of complication, and in this particular remix where you're given no choice but to remix the thing sent to you, it seems too difficult to demand.

But I'm willing to discuss further, if you have any ideas of how it could work!

The remixing in this is so 'everything goes', though, that isn't it more that one work is being used as a prompt for the next, rather than a remix-remix?

And if it's more that one work is the prompt for the next, I can very easily see fanart working well: here's a drawing inspired by some detail of a story; here's a story inspired by some detail of the art.

I don't see a fanmix working very well, but fanart seems fairly workable to me?

Hmmmmmm. Well, I will edit the post to pose that question as well then! I would only want to go there if everyone involved was okay with getting a cross-medium assignment -- fan writers down for remixing a piece of art or having their fic remixed into a piece of art; fan artists down with remixing a fic or having their art remixed into a fic!

I've tried a bit of encouragement/pressure on a few people and got nowhere. I blame Rob and/or CBS network jerks, whoever it is that killed the synergy of s1.

We could try it with just the 4 of us: one writes the initial story and also writes the last remix? Or three of us could commit to two remixes, and the one who writes the starting story only one, so there's a total of 8 works in the end?

[as for multi-format remixes should an artist want to play, in last year's remix madness, I wrote a remix of one of Sang's short vids, from When Night Is Falling. I have no problem with that option. It was fun, and a different kind of remix challenge.]

Re recruitment, has anyone pinged the Elementary comm on DW? Or holmesian-news on LJ? And there are a couple people I might try tagging over on DW.

But yeah, even with a small group it could still be fun, and I certainly don't object to people creating twice, if they don't object to creating twice.

I have not promoted this anywhere but tumblr -- you guys are welcome to! I've decided it's going forward (a couple people have messaged me indicating interest in addition to the people on this post) so there will be a sign-up post going live tomorrow; it'll probably be best to wait until that's up before promoting it on those comms.
