On initiation

Ah, yes. That magical word that takes on such meaning in esoteric circles of all sorts.

Initiation.

To many people, it evokes images of secret ceremonies; of mysteries conferred; of vows taken. It is often treated as the gateway to belonging - entry into the "in crowd" of whatever clique is at the next layer of the layers of onion peel that ( Read more... )

Two thoughts. Well Maybe three
1. I read a book once called "Initiation" about a woman who lives several lifetimes and kept living different lives until she reached somem sort of karmic awareness..and mended the karmic damage she had previously done as an Egyptianinitiate who tried to get intiated too quickly. It's basically fiction but it actually fits the lesson you speak of rather well. I am not a big reincarnation person but reading this book effected me profondly at the time. it gave me an odd sort of hope.

2. In most 12 step recovery programs the process you describe above is similar to that of working the 12 steps. However, there is much less ritual and less danger of the ego getting in the way. The cool thing about AA's 12 steps is that if you don't complete them in a farily honest and spritiual way the penalty is pretty horrible. Not the Saw II kind of penalty but jail, insanity or death. Ironically the path of the 12 steps is harder for many than the jail, insanity, and death..and yet infinately more desirable to any ( ... )

Thanks for the book idea. I'll look into it.

The 12 step program is very much a spiritual path, and a very difficult one. Then again, I have yet to find a spiritual path that's easy. I left the ACOA group I had joined specifically because of the overwhelming number of folks who were there to feel good about how far they'd come and not there to work on their own issues. That also kept me out of WA at a time when I really should have gone. So I found a different path that works for me. I've met some folks who have really truly worked the 12 steps, and you're dead on. They are unmistakeable.

And thank you so much for your comments. These are things I think about a lot, and I love to ruminate and discuss. I just don't take the time to do it all that often. Need to do more of that.

Welcome aboard. I'll be happy to friend you back - but are you really prepared for a ton of posts about raw cat food and robots? :-)

Welcome to my rather eclectic brain.
