So the announcement was officially made a few days ago.  After months of rumours and various hints being dropped here and there the truth is finally revealed. Official Site...

The Bad News is that there will be no Ghostbusters 3.  At least not any time soon.  In a way I am relieved honestly.  Given the lack luster fandom results over the last couple of years I would rather the franchise remain as is than be resurrected only to circle the drain.

The Good News: DUH! We get a fucking video game.  Hell we get two in a sense, with the promise of a franchise to come.

If you want the up to date details Proton Charging Dot Com will keep you informed.  There is no better Ghostbusters news site that I can find.  I love those guys.

But the essential breakdown is this:
  • This will be a multiplatform game.
    • PC, X-Box 360, and Playstation 3 will feature a story based narrative game that is set in 1991, a few years after the second movie, where the Ghostbusters are hiering a "Weapons Specialist" that you will play as.  Yes thats right you get to join the Ghostbusters.
    • Wii, Playstation 2 will feature a multiplayer game where the players can play as either a Ghostbuster or a Ghost and battle each other.
  • The games will be part of a franchise of games meaning that they intend to produce further games.
  • It appears that the series will be cannon, but because its set in 1991it may not necesarily negate Extreme Ghostbusters...we will see how it meshes with The Real Ghostbusters.
  • Did I mention the cast...Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and oh yes...BILL FUCKING MURRAY are all on board to provide voices for the work.  Also returning is Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz, William Atherton as Walter Peck (Yes "Dickless" is back for another round of Venkman's abuse) and Brian Doyle Murray will be back as the teams Psychiatrist.
    • You heard me right...the original cast is back...all of them.  FUCK YOU NAYSAYERS!!
  • Aykroyd and Ramis will be penning the plot.  Only vague details have been released but it promises to be typical buster fanfare with plenty of references to the old movies (including the reunion with the Librarian Ghost from the first movie who the boys never got to bust...can't leave those loose ends fellas).
  • Training levels take place in the Sedgewick hotel as you get to bust Slimer, who seems to resemble a balance of both the movies and the animated series.  Thats right you get to relive the first successful bust.  I swear to god I am have the biggest nerdgasm ever here...can I get a towel?
So again this is for all intents and purposes Ghostbusters 3, as the whole cast is back, it seems to be cannon, and lets face it this could be as good as it gets.  I am hoping that this will help create the renewed interest in the franchise that the Comics (88MPH Studios' failed miniseries) and the Action Figures (NECA's single series Ghostbusters Monsters line) couldn't muster.

The only question remains...which do I buy PS3 or 360.  That will depend on which produces the better game...
