Ok, so I've had a "friend" on-line named Will for a month or so.  Will and I have had a number of conversations ranging from fun to awkward over that time, and we even met up once for an hour- he helped me with learning math as I study for the GRE. You're right, he doesn't seem like he would be a positive, supportive influence for you right now... but if he has social anxiety, it's quite possible he might overcome it someday, if he seeks treatment.

I will tell you that my own shy, sweet husband had a difficult stretch of years during which his social anxiety made it feel impossible to connect to people. He's empathic, but when depression and anxiety get in the way, it clouds the vision, it makes untrue things (for instance, that other people would never like him) seem untrue. He eventually realized that he needed help, he sought it and became the (admittedly quiet) but friendly person you know. There is hope - but it requires help.
