I will tell you that my own shy, sweet husband had a difficult stretch of years during which his social anxiety made it feel impossible to connect to people. He's empathic, but when depression and anxiety get in the way, it clouds the vision, it makes untrue things (for instance, that other people would never like him) seem untrue. He eventually realized that he needed help, he sought it and became the (admittedly quiet) but friendly person you know. There is hope - but it requires help.
