Halloween 2007: Part 1 of 3
Choosing a costume for Halloween is always a minor challenge. However, since sophomore year of college I’ve had an idea of what I wanted to be for Halloween. I wanted to do something with superheroes, but not something cliché like just being Superman or Batman. So I decided that I would be a super-villain, since they are well known, but not so well known as to have everyone around me wearing the same costume.
My choice was the Riddler. His costume is fairly recognizable (or so I thought…more on that later) and I’ve just always liked that character. He’s a villain that would rather out-think his opponent than out-fight them any day, and I completely get that. But since deciding on this costume 5 years ago, I’ve always been too cheap or too lazy to put the costume together. Go figure.
Not this year, however. This year, I would be the Riddler! I told my friend Patti what I wanted to be, and either on her own or (as I’d like to think) because of my choice, she decided to be Batgirl. And with that, we had a theme. Eventually more people picked Batman-themed costumes, and we ended up with 5 people going with the same theme…all because of a decision I made years ago.
And let me say kudos to Patti for pretty much putting my costume together herself. I think it came out awesome. Although, not everyone agreed. I thought the Riddler was very recognizable, but I also think it’s cool to tell people that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the best TV shows around…so what do I know. Only about half the people I ran into could correctly figure out who I was. Another 25% knew I was some kind of Batman-villain, but were grossly inaccurate as to who I was. They mostly thought I was the Joker. Honestly…
Do we look alike at all?
Despite some people not knowing who I was, I had a good time. I got to “live my dream” of being the Riddler. And more importantly, I got to live my other dream of socially maneuvering an entire group of people to do exactly what I wanted them to do. MWAH HA HA HA!
On second thought, maybe a super-villain was the perfect costume choice.
