Except that almost every level happens in a battlefield, with guys running around and stuff happening, which means that if you take any time off to explore or mess around killing guys (my favorite pastime with the previous iterations) the whole level passes you by.

And Screaming Mantis might have been a slightly more fun battle, but there was nothing interesting or innovative there. Whoo, she makes guys come after you! Oh no, you have to stun Meryl, like you did fifteen years ago! And gosh, a specific targeting point? Why didn't every game ever think of that?
