Having heard this version all the way through only once, I'm ready to say that it is THE definitive recording of Rhapsody in Blue. I'm biased, though. Fazil Say (fuh-ZEEL SIGH) gives it the same flavor I would, if I had finished the damn thing. Nope! Although I do loves me the Bernstein, this trumps it. Trust me! It is my fully objective verdict!

What makes it better? I like the Berstein version because he's not strict with the metre, and rightly so... you can *see* the train, trolly, ocean waves, dapper gentlemen and ladies strolling down the NY streets...

Well, Say isn't strict with meter either... but eh, I can't put it into words. It just hits me in the gut, whereas the Bernstein... does not. It's like movie adaptations of books where the characters aren't what you pictured. Although I will be heretical and say that even if Bernstein is closer to Gershwin's own vision, Say is closer to mine.
