He could barely remember what his life was like before the box.
Sure there was a mother’s care and siblings to play with. But these were nothing more than vague shapes of memories. Things that must have been there at one point, but he never could be cretin. The only thing could truly be sure, of was that no one had wanted him.
No one had wanted the runt of the litter, a scrawny little kitten with folded ears, and a grumpy disposition. No one had wanted a kitten that wouldn’t play with them or stand couldn’t to be petted.
He doesn’t remember how he got in the box or who put him there. He just remembered the box. How dark it was, how wet it became, and how he couldn’t get out! No matter how hard he tried or much he cried for someone, anyone to let him out. He didn’t want to be there, he didn’t like the box at all! He would even put up with the people who tried to pet him! If that’s what he had to do then he would do it, as long as someone would let him out of the cold dark!
But just when it seemed that he would never be let out, just when he had given up hope− someone let the light in.
Something very warm picked him up and held him close.
“Hold on little guy”
And he did, he held on very tightly.
When he became aware of his surroundings again, he was wrapped in something soft and warm, and a warm loving hand stroked his head. He looked up to meet the owner of that hand. And saw blue, kind blue eyes that looked as if they truly cared, as if they wanted him.
“Hey there Jack, how are you feel’n ?” The man asked.
All he could do was mew weekly and nuzzle into this man’s hand. Jack, was that his name now? He hoped so a name meant attachment, a name meant he was wanted!
“You’ve been abandoned too haven’t you Jack?”
He didn’t really understand the question but meowed anyway, it was all he could do. He didn’t want to be thrown away again.
The man smiled at him as if scenting his distress, “Well don’t worry buddy, you’re home now!”
Home… He rather liked the sound of that.

It was a rainy day. It had poured earlier that day but now all that fell from the over cast sky was a light drizzle. Alfred walked home with his hands buried in the pockets of his hooodie. He could care less about the weather. Honestly he could care less about a lot of things right now. Life sucked right now and he really didn’t want to dwell on anything; school, work, home, school, work, home. This pattern kept him sane, anything that kept him from thinking about his tattered love life.
Alfred sighed stopped in the middle of the side walk.
Three weeks ago, he’d woken up to find his bed empty, his boyfriend’s apartment vacant , and his boyfriend nowhere to be found.
Two weeks ago, after worrying, and searching for some kind of answer, he’d got one. It was in the form of an e-mail…
I have gone back to Japan, please don’t come after me, please forget about me, and please forgive me for what I must do.
One sentence, nothing more.
One week ago, he had come to accept that Kiku had dumped him. They had been together for almost year and a half! And what did he get in way of good-bye? No fight, no awkward break up conversation, not even a phone call. Eighteen months of care, and love and all he got was an empty bed and cowardly e-mail. And what pissed the most, was that he never had say in the matter! He didn’t even get the chance to yell at his ex for walking out on him! Kiku had disconnected his phone, blocked all of Alfred’s e-mail addresses, and had left no forwarding address when he had mo− no fled. Kiku had fled in the middle of the night like some of burglar, breaking his heart on his way out the window.
But what hurt the most, the thing that had kept him at night for the past few weeks was one question. Why?
Why had Kiku left him like that?
Sure he and Kiku had had their arguments, but those had never been anything big. Nothing that warranted such an abrupt end to their relationship, and Alfred had felt that despite their occasional fights that they were happy together. Or at least that was how he’d felt.
He would never get answer now. And some small part of him could help but wonder if it was his fault. Was it something he said, or was it something he did that drove Kiku away?
The rain began to pick up, the drizzle becoming a steady staccato on the pavement. Alfred, blinked and looked up at the sky, it didn’t matter anymore. Kiku was gone and he just needed to pick up the pieces of his heart and move on.
He was about to set off down the sidewalk again, when he heard a noise. It was faint, but it sounded like a whimper of an animal. Alfred stopped and looked around, but there was nothing to be found. Just few public trash cans and a few people running to find shelter from the rain. He thought that he was hearing things when he heard the sound again, a bit louder this time, more distinct.
Something was meowing, the sound was weak but he definitely heard it! He ran to the nearest trashcan and stuck his head in. At the bottom of the trash receptacle was nothing but an old shoe box that someone had taped the down. He strained to hear anything, but the box meowed again and Alfred moved. In one movement he snatched box out of the trash can, and torn the lid off; then felt sick to his stomach.
In the box was a small white kitten with an orange tail and patch over the right side of its head. The poor little guy had folded ears, and looked hardly over six weeks old. Some bastard had thrown away a kitten! Alfred felt his blood boil, how could someone do something like this? Just abandon something so defenseless!
The kitten mewled weekly and tried to lift its head, but it just didn’t have the strength. Alfred panicked, he carefully took the kitten from the box and held it close to his chest.
“Hold on little guy!” He said as he took off at run down the sidewalk. Home wasn’t too far away, but the little guy looked just about at death’s door.
“Please hold on!” he muttered, as he felt the kitten dig its claws into his hoodie.

It was very touch and go for the first few hours after he had gotten home with the cat. But the moment he had slammed the door to his apartment close he grabbed towels, and made call to a buddy of his who was in the middle of vet-school.
His friend arrived not too much later with kitten food, and his vet bag.
“He should be fine mate,” his friend had said after examining the kitten, “ you found him just in time. Just keep the little guy warm and try and feed him once he wakes up. But give me call if you need anything.”
He now sat on his sofa, holding the kitten wrapped up snuggly in several towels. He stroked the little guy's head. He felt that kind of vague emptiness one tends to feel after the panic had passed and the storm was over. He was still trying wrap his head around the fact that someone had actually thrown this little guy away like some empty wrapper! It’s not that hard to find a home for a kitten; heck whoever did this could have just as easily taken him to an animal shelter.
He felt the kitten stir in his under his hand, and he looked down to meet a pair of round eyes, that were a brilliant yellow-green. The kitten looked so tried but so very hopeful that he felt himself smiling for the first time in weeks.
“Hey there Jack, how are you feeling?” He didn’t know where the name Jack came from, but the name would do for now, at least until he got to know the cat personality better.
Jack nuzzled into his hand and mewled weakly. Then something clicked in the back of his head.
“You’ve been abandoned too haven’t you Jack?”
Just like the kitten he had been thrown away by someone who was supposed to love him. Tossed aside just like they were nothing, and left to fend for themselves in a world that could be so very cruel.
The kitten, Jack, meowed in response, the darker patches of fur that served as eyebrows turned up wards, vaguely distressed. The action made Alfred’s smile grow wilder. Jack had nothing worry about, he wasn’t going to throw him away.
“Well don’t worry buddy, you’re home now!” He said brightly, Jack relaxing into his hand. And Alfred felt content.
Kiku may have left him, may not have wanted him anymore, but for the first time in weeks he felt hopeful. Sure it would hurt for awhile and he knew he wouldn’t be ready to date any time soon. But right now he was willing to give his heart to an abandoned kitten. Who would love him unconditionally, and who needed him just much Alfred needed him.
One day he would find someone who would love him, but for now Jack was all the love he needed.
