anyone have bromine?

I need a little for the daguerreotypes. It makes the plates much more sensitive.
I wonder if I could use pool Bromine tablets. Anyone know how free it is in that stuff?
Just need some vapour.

This would indicate that bromine tabs aren't going to be very useful. These guys carry sodium bromide, but I don't know how easy it is to unlock the bromine from that.

NaBR + H2SO4 -> well, stuff, but should release some Br gas.

I'm not familiar with pool bromine tablets, but if they contain hypobromate or bromide plus hypochlorate then treating them with acid (battery acid H2SO4 is a good choice) will release Br2 gas. Add the acid drop wise with good containment/ventilation as bromine is nasty stuff. (Muriatic Acid-HCl should work but is more likely to add HCL vapor to contaminate the bromine.) You will know if it works because bromine is red brown vs the green of chlorine.

A spray bottle full of a mixture of detergent, vegetable oil and water is good to use on any bromine that needs to be cleaned up. (US Patent 4,898,721) Shake well before using.

Add Pool bromine tablets to some hot (>50C) dilute HCl.
