I first heard of such things from the cheesy role-playing game "Top Secret".

Pretty keen that guy has done some failure analysis on surviving gyrojet ammunition.
I was really thinking more in terms of "neat guns through the mail".
Adjusted for inflation you're right about the prices: there are cheaper surplus mausers on the market today, and you can still order Garands from the CMP.
