I grew up in a time when most of those "offensive" terms were used with no regard to the persons around. My family was referred to as "DAGOS" or "WOPS" and you just dealt with it, didn't worry about it. Or you called the person back whatever heritage they were. Most of the time it wasn't a big deal.
That was until the "righteous" people got involved. Ones who felt that everybody is super sensitive and these names wielded deadly power to permanently harm them. Now it's completely offensive to call somebody a slang name.
Personally I don't think being called a "WOP" ever caused any serious damage to me as a child, physically or psychologically.
