Today, in my "Hollywood" film studies class, we were talking about the Academy Awards. Our tutor wrote all the winning films (as in, actor or film won a big award) up on the whiteboard - Crash, Syriana, The Constant Gardener and Capote (Walk the Line doesn't really fit with them, but hey). And then she put Brokeback Mountain at the bottom of the list. It looked something like this:

Crash - race/violence/class
Syriana - Oil, Middle East situation (so race/violence/greed)
The Constant Gardener - African governmental situations (same as Syriana)
Capote - violence/class

Brokeback Mountain - religion

So, it's easy to see what Hollywood feels comfortable promoting as their shared view, and what they don't. Plus, with all the psycho Christians... it's a copout, but that's America.
