“Cool.”
“Is that all you have to say, Major?”
“Um, Really cool?”
“Oh for crying out loud!”
“You asked what I thought, and I just gave you the answer. Um, Sir.”
“Listen, Major. No normal person, no military cadet, has ever *dreamed* of *ever* seeing something like this!”
“Yes, Sir. That’s why I said cool.”
“Don’t you think you could be a *little* bit more enthusiastic? It is, after all, the most valuable artifact of all time. One might even say the key to our history.”
“And…”
“And, you’re going through it tomorrow, perhaps on a one way trip. Major, you’ve never felt *anything* as good as this. Walking up the ramp, it’s like electricity running through you; the anticipation…will it hurt? What will it feel like? What will be on the other end?
“You get to the event horizon, face to face. It’s a pool of the bluest water you’ve ever seen. It will mesmerize you; pull you in to its addiction. You will be able to feel the coolness on your face as it ripples gently.
“And when you do finally take that step through, it’s like diving into the coldest depths you’ve never had the pleasure to experience.
“It’s like stars, galaxies, planets; all cease to exist as you’re pulled violently from Earth to your destination, by the force of a stable wormhole that people discovered eons ago.
“And when you take that first step out, and breathe in, your lungs crack with icy pleasure with your first breath. It’s pure bliss.”
Major Sheppard left the Generals’ office that day with a sense of awe. He was going through the Stargate the next day, and his little chat with the General…he was really looking forward to it. Being a Major in the Air force really made you appreciate new experiences. Especially with a first hand view from General O’Neill.
Major Sheppard took a small detour back to his temporary quarters, to take a look in the Gate Room.
Towering a good five times higher than himself, he walked hesitantly up the ramp, placing his hands on the cold naquadah ring.
“Awesome.” John breathed, as a shiver of excitement ran up his arm from the anticipation of traveling to another Galaxy. Oh yeah, O’Neill was right.
