Other Characters: Judas Iscariot, Leia Organa, Armand, Vincent Chase, Dionysus
Character Name: Ariadne
Series: Inception
Age: Her age isn't explicitly stated, but around 21-22
From When?: After returning to the first level of dreaming, later in the week.
Inmate/Warden: Warden - Ariadne is far too good to be an inmate. She isn't in the dream to steal anything, she's there purely out of loyalty to the rest of the team. As well, she acts as something of a liaison for Cobb, trying to make sure that Cobb doesn't leave anyone's concerns out.
Item: Her watch. As well, she has her slightly hollowed gold bishop (her totem) with her. It isn't her warden item, but she keeps it on her person. Figured it's worth a mention.
Abilities/Powers:
Ariadne herself has no particular supernatural abilities of any kind. As well, she has very limited combat training, only what the team has taught her before the Fischer Inception. However, she's very quick to pick up on things and is incredibly studious, more than willing to learn anything offered. As well, she knows how to alpine ski and swim and can speak fluent French and English. An "ability," that really belongs more under personality, is that she observes more individual differences and needs than others on the team and works to help translate those differences into advantages. For example, how she acts as a liaison between Cobb and his issues to the rest of the team.
Personality:
Above anything else, Ariadne is loyal to her friends, what few she has. She feels an incredible need to support those around her, despite any physical or emotional risk. In the film, she first of all volunteers for the dangerous job and continues on with it despite the obvious danger of militarized projections and limbo. Even further, she ventures into limbo with Cobb to bring back Fischer and save Cobb's chance to see his children again. She feels such a strong connection to other people, even if they don't necessarily feel the same for her. Needless to say, she excels at communicating the needs of individuals to an entire group, for example between Cobb and the rest of the team. She can sense out what a person needs from others and tries to relay that to people around her. As it is, she's incredibly trusting of others and a good sign of when she does fully trust someone is when she argues with them, again Cobb. She doesn't confront for the sake of being right but rather out of a very natural and intense concern for the person; asking only the necessary questions rather than simply drilling people for information. More often than not, she prods gently in order to draw out what's truly bothering the other person.
Speaking of interpersonal relationships, she, again, prefers to have a small group of friends that she knows intimately. Of the people in her life, the most important is clearly Cobb. She digs into his issues and under his skin almost from the get-go. She sees that there's something very clearly wrong with him and is absolutely intrigued by it. In a similar way, she feels drawn to the rest of the team. Arthur and Eames are excellent sources of friendship, as strange as it might be for a young woman her age to be considering much older men to be friends. They answer her every question and she sees them as something akin to mentors or older brothers: people she can learn from but still trust and enjoy herself around. As well, they help her to overcome some of the fright of such a new thing as shared dreaming. She's very naturally curious and very obviously wants to continue to build and dream with such endless limits. Even while she isn't "required" to enter the dream, she continues to ask questions about every aspect of the field and learns the ins and outs of building dreams very quickly.
As well, Ariadne is incredibly intelligent and bright. She actively watches and observes the world around her even if she doesn't comment on it. It helps her to think much better on her toes and allows her to think while under extreme pressure, such as when facing extreme danger during the Fischer Inception as well as before she's even introduced to dream sharing. When Cobb first approaches her and tests her with maze drawing, it takes her a couple tries but she manages to stump him with a labyrinth drawn in under a minute. As well, when the freight train crashes into her and Cobb's sedan, she very quickly puts together the pieces that his subconscious brought the train into the dream; she knows all of the layouts by heart and that there were no trains in any of her designs. This then leads her to address the issues with Cobb before they continue any deeper into anyone's subconscious. Another excellent example is her quick thinking in the hospital after Fischer is shot and goes to limbo.
However, despite all of this, she does lack some courage and strong composure due to her quiet nature. The clearest example of this is her relationship with Cobb's projection of Mal. The older woman intimidates her quite considerably, not only because of the danger but but also because of the immense gap in both knowledge and maturity. Ariadne is mature in many ways, yes, but she lacks in other less essential ways, such as romantic relationships and a great deal of more "adult" matters. She still anchors the team in times of great stress, but when faced with Mal, she flinches away. Ariadne can very easily face gunfire despite a lack of combat training of any kind, but Mal is simply everything Ariadne feels she's not: a sure, confident, and wise woman.
Ariadne is, though, a sure, confident, and wise woman, just in her own ways. She has no need to boast of her knowledge and aptitude and when she is complimented by Cobb, she rejoices only with a very quiet smile. When it comes to doing her job, she does it quite well and knows this but, again, feels no need to outwardly show it. Her own private knowledge of success is more than good enough for her. Her naturally reserved nature prevents her from making boorish outbursts or exaggerated celebrations. Instead, she focuses on getting to the next task and doing the very best work that she and the team can.
Upon arriving on the Barge, she will take her job very seriously from the get-go. She'll be a very determined and passionate warden who will be very eager to get to know her inmate. However, she could easily get overwhelmed with the very nature of the Barge. Over time, she can better learn to balance personal matters and grow more to maturity despite the very dangerous and difficult setting; she thrives under pressure and this will be no different. Potential problems include her becoming burnt out with a "difficult" inmate and the violent atmosphere disrupting her sensibilities.
Path to Redemption: N/A
History:
Not much is known explicitly in her canon about her history but from what is given can be put together. She likely came from an upper-middle class family, most evidenced by the fact that she can study architecture in France while still speaking in a plain, likely midwestern accent. She grew up in a capable and loving family that demanded only the best from her, pushing her toward excellence and inviting her to explore her potential wherever it took her. They provided the financial means to study and travel abroad. She also likely attended private schools with strong fine arts programs where she first started taking drafting classes and inspired her desire to pursue architecture. She is still in the process of finishing her degree at the
Ecole des Beaux-Arts for architecture, with a minor in French.
While studying under Dr. Stephen Miles, she was approached by Dominic Cobb for work placement and the rest can be found at
the wiki. After returning to the first level of the dream, she spends a couple days with the team before she's approached by the Admiral. Without hesitation, she makes her deal and arrives on the Barge.
Sample Journal Entry:
Has anyone seen the view yet? It's… for a ship that transcends space and time, it really lives up to its tag line. At least for me. I mean, how many people are on the ship? And how do twenty rooms fit on one short hallway?
It's… really something.
This is just… unbelievable.
Sample RP:
[This is set during a voicetesting thread I did, not on the Barge.]
Ariadne found the heels incredibly awkward to walk in and she felt almost like a lumbering giant as she moved slowly through the upscale apartment. The place was absolutely marvelous and her eyes took in all of the minuscule details of the place, all of the little accents such as the gold leafing above the door simply amazed her. She simply marveled at when a dreamer could get so specific down to such a small scale. She drank in everything about the sitting room: the armchair with carved lion's heads on the arms, the silver embroidered pillows, and even the gemmed corners of the mirror.
"This is incredible," she barely breathed out, head twisting around to try and see all of it at once. "You made all of it?"
However, she still didn't look over at Arthur, her eyes continuing to wander about the room. Sure, she'd done some creating of her own, but to see his work up close was beyond the level of detail even she could manage and part of her figured that it simply stemmed from his immensely greater amount of experience.
Finally, she looked over to him for the answer and all she received was a small smile. It was all she needed.
Special Notes: She knows that Cobb used inception on Mal. However, this isn't something she would be super cavalier with and will not be bringing it up unless I have explicit ooc permission to do so.
