[After some time of absence, Naoto's actually posting a video on the network. 'He' looks unperturbed as usual, but if anyone actually knew 'him', 'he's' irritated right now]My apologies for the maps still not being ready. We've finished, but without a copying machine, it takes time to re-draw a map for each person here. Several are ready now, but I ( Read more... )

[Up until the end of that feed, Lenalee had been prepared to offer a rough estimate of how many people are in the building. She can count off the top of her head all the Black Order members (the shady Xi and... Alma... included), as well as several others she's grown (marginally) closer to over the last few weeks.

But then she sees Naoto's eyes harden, the way his gaze focuses on something out-of frame, and she knows what he's seeing. She's been seeing them, too. Every morning, every evening. Getting worse as the week wears on. So she forgets about giving a headcount and instead starts an audio feed- so no one has to feel as if the other is trying to pry- and says, in the tight voice of someone trying to fake their way through a difficult situation:]

Naoto? Are you all right?

[Not at all. It's like someone gave her Shadow a crayon and said go wild... or maybe it was a bucket of blood. Either way, it's getting on her nerves]

Just fine. Would this be one of the town's usual tricks?

[Knowing Libby, it could very well be the latter. But let's just cross our fingers and hope to hell and high water that it's crayon.] Ah...

[That's right, Naoto wouldn't have experienced the play weeks yet.] Yes, it seems like it. And I'm- I'm sure that anything your walls might... say... is grossly exaggerated, so please don't let whatever you see written on them rattle you too much.

[Lenalee defense mechanism number one: be the hypocrite.]

... No, it's true, but I've heard all of it before.

[Eh, Naoto will take this head on]

-They're true?

[A new tone of unease creeps into her voice. What she's been seeing... had the margin of error to be simply exaggerations meant to unsettle her. But hearing Naoto confirm that at least some of the scribbling refer to real things...]

Well, figuratively speaking. A few of them are ridiculous, but some I had yelled at me before.

Yelled at you-? [While "figuratively speaking" is certainly not as upsetting as "literally speaking", even that still implies a certain amount of truth. And looking at the sorts of things on her own walls, she can only imagine how something like that must have felt for Naoto. She wrings her hands on her lap for a moment before saying:] ...I'm sorry, Naoto.

There's no need to apologize. I've confronted all of this before... Libitina will have to do her worse to get under my skin.

[Weakly, a tone of voice that usually comes out when she's trying to hold herself back from being a total mother hen:] Still...! I sincerely hope she doesn't.

I doubt she will this soon.

That still sounds as though you believe that she eventually will...

If we are considered her toys, then view it as such. Children can treat them fairly, but then break them the next moment either on accident or on purpose. It's her call really...

You shouldn't view yourself as a toy, Naoto. It doesn't matter if she thinks us toys or sacrifices- if you start to believe her convictions, and [god forbid] think them yourself, then she's already winning.

[This is something she can speak with absolute vehemence on. Rhode was much the same way back on the Ark, after all; treating Lavi's mind as something to play with. And even earlier than that, she'd treated Lenalee herself as a living doll. And she can't ever picture herself as calling herself a doll simply because Rhode saw her as such, so why should Naoto feel as if Libitina thinking them toys makes them toys?]

You misunderstood me. If you view it from her perspective, we could be killed some time from now or in a few minutes. I know very well I'm not a toy for her amusement which is why I'm going to figure out exactly what happened to this city.

[Oh, yes, talk about misunderstanding. But Lenalee's actually relieved, not embarrassed, to hear Naoto correct her. She exhales shakily, running a hand through her hair and jostling the PDA.]

Even so, I refuse to believe we can be killed just like that. Why would she, if she wants us to entertain her? [Unless (and her throat tightens) death wasn't to have a permanence here for anyone, just like with Sasuke. Slightly softer:] ...Would you like any help, Naoto? I know you have Lavi helping with the maps, but... I'd like to be of assistance, too.

Don't underestimate cruelty when it comes to a child.

[She pauses, thinking] ... I have yet to begin any of my research, but I'll most likely begin looking into the genocide and it's various connections to Libitina. I would like to begin as soon as possible; however, my writing material is limited after map making. If you had a notebook or two to spare...
