True Friends

Did you ever have a fake friend? What makes a true friend true and a fake friend fake? Why have a fake friend? How do you discern who is for real?

Just referring to the general scenario and asking LJ friends what they think.

A person who is only your friend when he needs or wants something from you. After he gets what he wants, he ignores you until he wants something else.

Well, I usually use special sunglasses, when I can't get my hands on proper contact lenses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Live

oh...you didn't mean like that.

I suppose a fake friend tends to either be there for a purpose...needing/wanting something...and only that. Or in the alternative, tries to make the friendship this formalized thing. Like it's more of a job than an organic relationship.

Failing that again, I check to see if they're really lizard people. Must be vigilent.

Meh. I'd rather have a few real friends than a horde of fake ones. Real friends enjoy being with you, just because you're you. This isn't the sort of thing you can determine in the short term, but it becomes apparent over time. Real friends will tell you the hard stuff, do the hard stuff, and put up with the results, because you're worth it to them.

The real friends are the ones who accept you for who you are...

And love you for it.

Real friends don't try to steal your boyfriend. Yes, I just slammed myself. You deserve better friends than I ever was, and I admit that freely.

I'm still sorry, but that doesn't really change anything.

You are a very forgiving person, and I think sometimes you need to guard your heart a little harder. Merry Christmas, Rho.
