Superstorm Bopha

A striking image shot 2 December, from the ISS, shows Typhoon Bopha, aka Pablo, bearing down on the Philippines.

In Atlantic cyclone terms, the megastorm would have been classified as a Category 5 storm when it smashed into the island group yesterday.

Dang, that is one massive storm. Can you imagine if that hit NY or the East Coast? forget about it, there wouldn't be a Long Island anymore.

Yeah, and Manhattan would be three-story piles of broken glass. My neighborhood would be gone, too. Scary stuff!

Yeah, it certainly scary. I was convinced Sandy would veer to the right at the last possible second, only because it's so rare for a hurricane to hit the East Coast.

Half my neighborhood -- including a few rows of not just houses but also the lots on which they'd stood -- was washed away in 1938 and 1955. Makes it easier to remember.

Also: Sandy was big, but its winds were down to Cat 1 when it hit. The next superstorm could come earlier in the year and stay stronger. Eek!
