Firstly, this dissertation would not have been possible were it not for the fans of Supernatural. Their dedication to the show and the sense of community that permeates everything they participate in, whether it’s a convention, creating wondrous pieces of fan fiction or simply discussing the show online, is what inspired this dissertation. A special thanks to the ten participants of my questionnaire - they provided me with more data than I could have hoped for or use, for which I am eternally grateful. By proxy, this dissertation would not have had such a fruitful example of modern television without those who create Supernatural, and the actors who bring to life the characters to such a level that the fans, myself included, find never-ending inspiration in them.

Secondly, I would like to thank Dave Woods, who was just as enthusiastic about the topic as I was when I began planning this dissertation. Had he not been, I would have been lost as to what to write.

Thirdly, I would like to thank my family and friends; particularly Elizabeth Potts and Bethan Stranks, who both kept me relatively sane as I battled with my fear of the blank page. Not to mention, the brilliant proof reading that Bethan provided, curbing my vocabulary crutches and my misguided affection of using the comma and the semi-colon far too regularly.

Lastly, a special thanks to my parents, who have always told me that as long as I do my best then that’s all that matters. I think this is my best.
