Of fic and fantasy

Of late I seem to be in one of my posting lulls. My apathy really knows no bounds. Of course it becomes particularly difficult to work up some writing gumption when I am enthralled by a fic. My fic reading, like the posting and really all my interests not named Kari, comes in waves; I read one or two consecutively, then take a week or so off. I ( Read more... )

Well you know my thoughts on the beginning of Roman Holiday.

I do know that she wrote the story as it came to her. Even she wasn't completely sure how it would all pan out in the end, but I believe the second story is much stronger, and she has a much tighter and consistent end product.

I think in the other two stories Hermione is less fanon-ish, and a bit more herself. I don't know if that was the fanon issues you referred to but it was one for me. Although in general I really love her characterizations especially of minor canon characters.

But I'm reserving my final analysis, and judgment, until the last story is complete.

My, I'm being a bit verbose today aren't I?

Hermione's characterization (I'm sleeping with Draco, I'm in love with Snape, I love Draco, Ron loves me, I love Snape, I'm still alone, Bill Weasley - yum) is what bothered me, but that's just a piece of a larger problem. I've mentioned it to you before - fanon characters become too perfect and less human.

Anna gets away with it here because the bulk of the story is unbelievably good, but I am very glad to hear that the sequels are more structured. I think it will help.

You should always write at least this much.

Hermione is a bit too perfect, but remembering that she is teenager during this makes some of her flittiness, as far as the men in the story are concerned, more palatable.

I think Hermione's humaness becomes much more in evidence in JoTN, but in the last one is crucial, and is done rather well.

I told you before how much I came to love her Sybil(sp), and I found her to be amazingly human, and flawed, and Harry has some rather lovely moments in relation to her. The best of that though doesn't come until the end of JoTN though.

Hmm, and Sal, I really have a deep and t00by love for Sal.

RH and JotN are both v. enjoyable, though I definately have issues with her Snape - I just cannot believe that someone who would try to give an innocent man to dementors because of an old grudge would end up as her Snape has. This is something I think loads of snape ficcers need to look at. Apart from that, they get better as they go along.

I have the same issues with most Snape fics, but not as much with these. She makes at least some attempt at canon Snape. While I didn't buy it all, it didn't bother me enough to distract from the story, except in the afore-mentioned beginning and ending. Ditto Hermione, just more so.

I'm excited to know they get better and will hopefully start it before the day is out.

Any other recs for future consumption are appreciated.

I have lots of issues with quite a lot of the Snape characterizations in fic. Too many to even begin to go into, but with this one I always sort of though that maybe the illuminata had some sort of permanent effect on him.

It's a tenuous little thread that I hang my disbelief from, but it's working for me.

Hmm. That could work, I suppose. It would at least stop the little nagging voice there at the back of my head every time Snape is halfway decent. Thanks!
