Birthdays and stuff. Heavy on the stuff.

Jun 10, 2003 13:26

Since I've been busy catching up on all the stuff I've missed since Friday , I haven't had the chance to do a proper write up of my birthday weekend. I'm not really feeling a full diatribe, at least on this, right now. When in doubt, Bulleted Lists!

Good lord, don't be mortified. I was most definitely joking. And unless I'm pretty sure you were on the "Good" list anyway. Can't help with the hell thing though. Sorry.

It most certainly is about US. In fact I'm not even sure there's other people out there. (I still admit no panting)

Oh, I know you knew. And since I must say it, now you know I know you knew. Still I removed the statement as it just seemed overly harsh even though I know most people will know...

If I'm to steer we may actually miss Hell completely and end up in Kansas. Which is really still kinda Hell.

I'm all up for mutual admiration. *takes permanent residence on your friends of list*

Yay! I'm glad you had a nice birthday weekend. :) Chris wanted me to call you, but I wibbled immaturely and felt stupid about it, so I didn't. Meh.

Thank you! I did have a most wonderful weekend. Of course I had no punting, so you've got a bit on me.

I too am a alumnus of the Hard Knock School of Immature Wibbling. I got high marks on telephone b00bery, as you are painfully aware. So do not feel stupid as I would have done the same thing, though without the British prodding.

Well, it's kind of lame, especially as I talk on the phone all day (or maybe that's the reason?), I have a hard time calling people unannounced. I mean, there are literally a handful of people I will call without it being prearranged - my sister, my best friend. I think that might be it. I won't call Mark or my other friends without them knowing I would call. It's a shy thing, but it's also a "I don't want to disturb them, they are probably busy" thing. I'm lame.

Well your reasoning seems a whole lot more lucid and forgivable than my sheer awkward uncomfortability. I dread phone calls of any sort. Though in recent years I have conquered my fear of ordering pizza (oh the things you learn in college).

I'm really pathetic on the phone. I pace. I forget everything the minute I mean to say it. I repeat everything numerous times. Really I just become the 8 year old kid calling a girl on his buddy's behalf.

In all honesty, I'm surprised I worked up the nerve to call you the time I did.

I am definitely glad I did though.

You should feel no shame regarding the fear factor of Finding Nemo. Both Sleeping Beauty, and Dumbo still, in select parts only, give me the absolute creeps. Practically nightmare quality stuff actually.

Definitely glad I got that birthday greeting in in a timely manner. If I'm going to hell I'd really like it be related to some serious sinning, instead of my normal lack of focus.

I can definitely see the heebie-jeebie factor in some of the older Disney stuff. None of it really did much too me though. I think it was because everything was so obviously a cartoon. With Nemo my problem was the realism with which the sea is rendered. And you know, I just have problems with that inescapable underwater helplessness.

Your greeting certainly made the cut off, though I've removed the decree for those whose didn't. Yours was so nice that I even responded on a Sunday. Feel privileged.

In Dumbo it's the pink elephants on parade bit. It's the nightmarish surrealism that freaks me out every time. *shudders*

Feel privileged

I was shocked actually. Norman J. on the weekend always throws me a little.

I've removed the decree for those whose didn't.

Very kind of you to stop damning those who weren't timely in their birthday greetings. Your generosity of spirit knows no bounds.

Them elephants were damn creepy.

Your generosity of spirit knows no bounds.
I am quite shocked by it myself sometimes.

That's right boys and girls and pokerys

*handbag* :-P ;-)

I hadn't actually heard about Matrix Reloaded: The IMAX Experience before, but it sounds decidedly nifty. Is it actually the same movie as the relatively-small-screen big-screen version, or has it been edited down at all? I ask this because traditionally IMAX cinema movies tend to be more like 75 minutes or less, often significantly so, as opposed to the traditional 90-120 minutes at mainstream cinemas.

Haven't seen MR at all yet, but could be tempted to see it only at an IMAX screen if that's the best way to do so. It opens at the bfi in Waterloo on the 4th of July - heh, fancy that! - which is the best of the four (I think...?) IMAX places I've been to.

Yes it's the same MR, just 8 stories tall. Actually it was letter boxed, so it probably closer 6.5 or 7 stories tall.

MR is the first 2 hour+ movie ever shown on IMAX screens. Previously IMAX projectors couldn't handle anything longer than 120 minutes (hence the editing of Apollo 13 and Episode II). Just this year they've finally been able to expand their technology to hit the 150 minute mark.

The even better news is IMAX Corp's new DMR (digital re-mastering) technology allows any 35mm movie print to be re-formatted to fit the 15/70 IMAX ratio.

Now I've seen regular 35mm prints blown up to a slight fuzzy distortion on IMAX screens before (Signs and Goldmember). Having watched MR on both a regular print and the huge print, I definitely saw an improvement in the latter.

With this new technology any major release can be shown on an IMAX screen. This is a major strike in the drive to bring back 70mm films and other large formats. Maybe people will once again shoot movies in that ratio (the last one I remember doing it was The Hunt ( ... )
