Challenge Number: 21
Said the night wind to the little lamb
Do you hear what I hear?
A couple of young men rounded the street corner on Christmas Eve night, both dressed in winter garb and wrapped in nice knitted scarves. One man was tall with very pale skin, the other far shorter with more average skin. They held each other’s hands as they sang Christmas carols at the tops of their lungs.
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind maid moan
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone…
This winter was especially cold in New Jersey, with the temperature on this night reaching as low as almost zero Fahrenheit. Both men could see their breaths, and their noses began to flush to a bright red. Despite it being before Christmas still, snow fell from the sky like it was early February. Snow had already coated the ground, and the taller man bent down to grab a handful, hurling it at the shorter one.
Sing the ancient yuletide carol, fa la la la la, la la la la
After a brief snowball fight, the men resumed caroling and sang whatever came to mind. It didn’t take them long to reach their final house destination before returning home: the nice old lady down the street.
Who is that, knocking on the door?
Who is it, knocking like that?
The dear lady opened the door and grinned deeply. “Gerard! Frank! How nice of you two boys to stop by.” Both men broke out into Jingle Bells, the final carol of the night. As they slowed, the lady opened the door all the way, letting the scent of snickerdoodles float from the kitchen. “Come in, boys.” The older woman opened the door the rest of the way. “I have cocoas and cookies.
The men followed the frail old woman back into her house and sat at the table. She quickly passed cookies to them and they ate happily. For several minutes, they spoke about each other’s lives and how they were feeling until they were all tired out and in food comas.
It came upon a midnight clear…
The clock was striking the hour when Gerard and Frank politely excused themselves from their neighbor’s home and headed back out into the winter cold. They sang some more as they wandered back to their small home and quickly made their way inside once they arrived. Their puppies were quick to greet their daddies once both men were in the door and the men made a point to play with the dogs for a bit before walking to their room.
Once inside, both men were too tired to do much, so they climbed into the warm comfort of the bed and turned on the television. Not worried about doing anything special, Gerard laid on his back with Frank curled up just under his chin. Gerard spent almost five minutes flipping through channels until they picked the perfect Christmas Eve film: Christmas Evil. The movie seemed to drag on forever as the men grew increasingly tired until they fell asleep. Christmas Evil hadn’t even ended yet.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know...
When the men awoke, snow was falling heavily. Gerard, as the first one up, watched his smaller partner sleep happily for a few minutes, then decided to wake him. “Frankie,” he whispered, “It’s Christmas.” Frank just groaned quietly in his sleep and rolled over, now facing away from Gerard. The taller man quickly took advantage of the freedom and stood up. He made two mugs of coffee and two stacks of gingerbread pancakes, a recipe he learned from his mom, and brought them back to his still unconscious boyfriend. “Frankie, I made breakfast.”
The smaller man rubbed his eyes and rolled to face Gerard. “Do I smell gingerbread pancakes?” Frank mumbled almost inaudibly.
Gerard laughed. “Yep. Merry Christmas, sweetheart.” He kissed the other man softly.
Frank couldn’t help but grin. “Merry Christmas.”
As long as you love me so,
Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!
