I am also badly afraid of getting shots--I nearly passed out when I got my flu shot this year--but I get weekly acupuncture treatments for back pain. I will not lie, sometimes some of the needles hurt when they go in, but it doesn't last long. And, like you say, they aren't injecting anything in me. It's completely different than a shot. Smaller, shorter needles, for one thing. And the acupuncture REALLY helps the pain when nothing else was helping.
I have found that acupuncture works more quickly for more recent problems, while chronic problems take longer to respond to the treatments. Another reason not to put of treatment!
Shelves really help a house to feel more "finished" for me. They're so easy to install, with brackets and such, and they help with storage and decoration.
If you have a Hollywood bed frame (the metal ones that hold a boxspring), you can make a headboard out of plywood, batting and material, a la HGTV. That helps to "grown-upify" a house.
The problem is that neither of us is very crafty or handy with tools. I think I just need to take control and become handy with tools. Maybe that will be on my life list!
What about looking around for a headboard or a bedframe at a thrift shop or on Craigslist? If you find something in iron or metal you can spray paint it any color you want.
It's trickier to find them with a California King bed, but I've been looking!
Shelving is the secret! I guess I am always wary of shelving because I live and grew up in earthquake country. For instance, there's nothing on the wall behind our bed... I'm thinking a decal of some type might be a nice compromise.
I had acupuncture for lady business type things - not sure if it helped but it certainly didn't hurt, was covered by my insurance at the time, and definitely helped with stress. It's the closest I've been to being able to meditate and not like injections at all.
I traded in a "real" bedframe with mattress and boxspring (because it was a double and I wanted a queen) for the Ikea Hemnes frame, with a regular queen mattress and no boxspring. We were a little afraid that it would be too cheap and flimsy after the old one, but we love it. It's not the bed of our dreams or anything, but the beds of my dreams all cost a couple of thousand dollars and, really, I have better things to spend my money on. (And we did spend a lot on the mattress.)
I enjoy the Ikea frames also, but Ian refuses to buy anything from Ikea if you're meant to sit on it or lay on it. This has caused issues when, for instance, I voted for an Ikea couch rather than an old futon that used to belong to THE DOG. Eventually we worked out a compromise, but it did not involve Ikea! Sigh. My husband is mean.
My husband has the same rule, and I am also on board with it for sofas and chairs for grownups. But Penny loves her Ikea bed (possibly more than she loves me, and only slightly less than she loves the cat) and I am pretty fond of mine, too. But we did some extra reinforcements on our bed, I believe, and we do not have any Ikea mattresses. That may be key.
She also has the most expensive Ikea kid's bed, and I think the Hemnes is the most expensive Ikea frame for adults. Which is still pretty cheap, but there is a big difference between their top of the line and the bottom of the line, for sure.

I agree with Patrick about shelving, too.
