I had one for 2 years and since it has no contact with your inner mouth (the top ball may clink your bottom teeth slightly when you smile), there's rarely damage. I would bute the top bit out of habit, so as long as you don't do that!
Vertical would be good. I've known people with thinner lips who really suited a vertical labret, you'd have no problems at all.
I find it difficult not to bite / tug on my regular labret piercing out of habit, so I don't think you're likely to avoid that either way, but yeah- centre labret if anything is more likely to wear on your gums depending on placement. Mine has, a tiny amount, but it's nothing noticeable.
I think a vertical labret would be the best bet on you. I have fairly thin lips (picture) and yet I managed a vertical labret.
There's really quite minimal damage to teeth and gums with a vertical labret because the entirety of the piercing is outside of your mouth.
I did have a habit of tapping the top ball on my front teeth to produce a clicking sound when I was thinking or out of nervous habit. I taught myself not to do that because I'm sure I would've ended up damaging my front teeth (whether that be chipping, or otherwise) in the long run.
OMG, what are you talking about?! Your lower lip is definitely not "too thin" for a vertical labret! It's perfect! (Then again, I'm bias and have had mine for about 2 years now.) =D
