I honestly have no idea about schools or neighborhoods in charlotte.
But I can say you are right to want to start now, the earlier the better, so you're not in a crunch and forced to just up and relocate, although honestly I would suggest possibly an apartment temporarily so you have a chance to see the neighborhoods, schools etc, first hand.
Call me if you need anything!! And definitley when you get here!
I just say that because honestly, if Chris & I had tried to buy a home when I first moved here with no info on the area, just going off of what I've searched online or by looks, I would have been screwed
Plus this gives you a little time to buy and you wont' be so crunched
Don't move to Concord- it sucks. There's a lot of magnet schools and stuff here, so I'm not so sure. I can pretty much outline the bad neighborhoods. And I think the apartment idea is probably the way to go at first, really- Sara lived in one for a while before she bought the house, and it did give her time to shop. We love you! *Big huggles across the interweb*
