It's funny, I work at a university, but it takes reading a post like this to make me actually have nostalgia for my undergrad. Your classes sound fabulous! And yay for singing! What are you working on that's in Chinese? Chen Yi? Tan Dun?
We're singing the Yellow River Cantata by Xian Xinghai, which I'm not familiar with. I'm actually listening to it right now for the first time, and it definitely has that mixture of western and eastern influences musically. Interestingly, each movement begins with a man speaking what I think is part of the poem that the text is based on, and then the choir joins in.
I think this quarter is going to be intellectually fascinating, although I've already had one 12-hour assignment scare which I didn't actually have to turn in. Oh well...at least I've been shaken out of my post-break stupor. :)
May I ask what type of work you do at the university? I think I would like to come back and work in one eventually.
I don't know that piece, either. Sounds awesome! I'll have to look that one up. I'm tentatively slated to do Tan Dun's Water Passion this summer, and it'll only be my second experience singing Chinese, and the first was ages ago and not necessarily correctly :D
I help out with the day to day annoyances that distract the scientists from doing science (admin, reimbursements, lab ordering, writing rec letters, etc.) in the biology department- not such an odd place for me to end up considering that I've loved the subject since I was very wee.
Universities are great places to work that have a fantastic atmosphere. They often offer nice perks for staff and academics, especially private universities. F'rinstance, where I work provides students, staff, and faculty a pass to ride all buses to and from the university for free, so I have zero transportation costs to get to and from work and can write the whole time!
